Mistress Elswyth appreciates Margaret for the competent way that she takes care of the management of her house. Because Mistress finds Margaret so valuable, she rewards her with many privileges. She gives her books that she has read and dresses that she has worn. Margaret delights in studying the books. Through them she wants to learn about the interests and pleasures of her Mistress. She also treasures her Mistress’ old clothes. They feel as though they have been soaked in the presence of her Mistress. She hopes that as she wears them she too will absorb something of that presence. Through this trigger, I am able to enter Lady Margaret’s mind and learn her ways. By exploring her attitudes and following her example it may just be possible even for me to be a useful companion for Lady Elswyth.
